Round Table on EU-Moldova Relations and Cooperation

The Round Table was held in the hotel Jazz in Chisinau, Moldova on 16-17 March 2012. It was organised by the BRIDGE Coordinator – ISCOMET Institute for Ethnic and Regional Studies from Maribor in cooperation with the Project partner organisation, Association for Ethnic and Regional Studies – ASER from Chisinau.

The aims of the RT were to critically analyse the cooperation between EU and Moldova in all fields covered by the ENP, to point out shortcomings and gaps in the cooperation, to discuss and elaborate ways and means for improving the role of civil society in this cooperation and for establishing a dialogue in this regard between governmental bodies and civil society and academic societies in Moldova, to elaborate proposals and recommendations for further development of the EU-Moldova relations with the emphasis on the period 2014-2020.

More than 30 experts and representatives of authorities from Moldova and EU were attending the RT among them 20 presented their contributions.

The programme was divided into four sections: Political dialogue and reforms, Cooperation on justice, freedoms and security, economic reform, transport, the information society and development and people-to-people contacts, education and culture.

Participants have presented their opinions and standpoints on different fields of EU-Moldova cooperation and proposed several recommendations to EU institutions, Members States and to Moldova authorities as well. Special attention was dedicated to the elaboration of the proposals and recommendations for the improving cooperation in the field of civil society especially for improving people-to-people contacts as these issues are most urgent for Moldovan civil society. Participants have in their recommendations urged Moldovan authorities to accelerate the reforms and adoption of the necessary legislation in order to reach the agreement on visa liberalisation as soon as possible. Together they elaborated more than 60 proposals altogether which were discussed. It was agreed that posed recommendations will be further elaborated and finally adopted at the BRIDGE concluding conference in Maribor, Slovenia.
